I have found the secret to weight loss!!

pigIt’s true! And I am going to share that secret with you. But first, the background…

About 10 years ago I weight a hefty 130-ish kilograms (around the 290lb mark). I was eating fast food three times a day and not exercising. In six months I was down to 82kgs.

More recently, last year in fact, I was back up to 107kg (236lb). On the 27th November I had to buy a new dress shirt that I could button up around the neck; I was MC for the annual work dinner and needed to wear a tie. I ended up buying a shirt with a 44cm collar. That was a rather large wake-up call, to go with the scales telling me 107kg! At that point I knew I had to use the secret trick that I used last time to trim down before I got even more out of control and that shirt size became the norm.

And here is that secret.

There is no secret!!! None. Zip. Nada. The only way to lose weight without resorting to surgery to cut out or off something is to use more calories than you consume. The end. Period. End of story.

It really is that simple. Way back when I stopped eating McDonalds for breakfast, Burger King for lunch and Pizza Hutt for dinner most days. I used portion control of healthy options, like low-fat yogurt and museli for breakfast, wholemeal salad sandwich for lunch and grilled chicken, steamed vege and rice for dinner. And I started exercising daily. With my weight as high as it was that was walking only to start, then eased into walking interspersed with jogging, then jogging, then running 10k events right up to the 42.2k of marathons!

This time around I was already eating pretty well, just lots of it. So I eased up on the portions and got back into running and Indoor Netball. And the weight dropped. I still have a wine with dinner, or a burger once a week so there is no deprivation happening. It is basic science at work. Eat more than you burn and it is stored for later as fat. East less than you burn and the reserves of fat are used. I am now down to 99.1kg, a loss of almost 8kg in a little over 100 days. So a healthy loss, about half a kilo a week. No crash dieting, no excessive restrictions. Just using the magic of science.

And that is the secret.
